January Scorecard
On a journey towards freedom and fulfillment.
Hey there,
Welcome to the first edition of my public scorecard. In this series, I will post about progress towards my goals with the intention of holding myself accountable, being authentic, and hopefully a bit encouraging.
Everything shared here is written from the perspective of a learner, a fellow journeyman, not an expert as I’m sure these posts will soon reveal :)
Q1 Goals
🟡 Goal: $10k of business income

We’ve made some progress towards our goal of $10k in this first quarter, but are a bit behind schedule. Regardless, I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made in launching Whimsy Forge and am excited to continue to grow that community. In future posts in this series, I’ll break it down a bit more, but the majority of this income is from Whimsy Forge with some income from interest on savings accounts.
🟢 Goal: Get triplex deal back on-track
This deserves it’s own post so I’ll keep it short for now, but back in May of ‘23 I bought an investment rental property here in St Petersburg. It’s a single family home with an ADU (garage with apartment above) in the back that was being used as a church. Through a series of unfortunate events including contractors essentially stealing a hefty sum of money, that project is still in the renovation phase. That whole time, going on two years, we’ve been paying several thousand a month in holding costs and, honestly, it’s been immensely stressful and discouraging.
However, things are starting to turn around. We have a new GC on the project who seems much more capable and honest. We’ve also learned a ton from the mistakes we made the first time around, so I’m optimistic we can get the project finished this summer and rented by the end of the year. It definitely won’t be a home run deal anymore, but I’ll be happy to get close to break even and count it as hard lessons learned.
🟢 Goal: Travel at least twice
Traveling is one of the main ways Charity and I really connect - it’s in our blood to adventure together. I’m excited to say we have two trips on the books. We actually have one tomorrow in Phoenix and another in March in LA. Both trips are work trips: the one in Phoenix is for Whimsy Forge and the other is for FloQast. We are extending both by a couple days to explore while we’re there though - this is actually the main way we travel, extending work trips.
Habits
⏸️ DCA 20% of gross income in an index fund. I decided to pause this while I am dealing with this triplex situation. I am trying to save as much cash as I can in case I need to use it to finish the renovation. I’ll sleep good once we’re through with the refinance.
⏸️ Exercise five times a week, many times with family. I was doing pretty good at this for most of January, but I hurt myself when I went rock climbing. I took a weird fall and bruised my ribs or something - I thought I had fractured them it hurt so bad, but x-ray cleared me. I’m already starting to feel better, so I’ll be back at it in a week or two.
🟡 Share five times a week. I’m having such a hard time with this one 😅 I’m really tying to find my voice on this and decide what my intention/purpose is with it. Work in progress.
🟢 Read at least one book a quarter. I’m making good progress on this one. I’m currently reading Accelerate which is about techniques for driving value through engineering for businesses. My manager recommended it to me as it’s guided some of our company’s philosophy.
That’s a wrap
That’s all for now! How’s progress on your first quarter goals going?
